On Sunday, March 27, 2022, Pope Francis called for the abolition of war during a speech at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. As he recounted the tragic devastation that the war was causing in Ukraine, Pope Francis renewed his “appeal” to “pray again, without getting tired, to the Queen of Peace, to whom we have consecrated humanity, especially Russia and Ukraine.” [1]
Pope Francis didn’t only express regret for the conflict in Ukraine or call for peace in his speech; he openly advocated for the abolition of war:
“War cannot be something inevitable: we must not get used to war! Instead, we must convert today’s indignation into tomorrow’s commitment. Because, if we come out of this story as before, we will all be guilty in some way. Faced with the danger of self-destruction, humanity understands that the time has come to abolish war, to erase it from human history before it is she who erases man from history.” [1]
Without a doubt, war is a dreadful thing. Terror, hatred, crime, anxiety, hunger, and fear accompany war as lives and property are destroyed. There is no question that our world would be a better place if none of this existed. But how exactly would the Pope abolish war? What can you do to avoid it? It’s a laudable pursuit that would benefit society, but how do we achieve it and who would do it? The Bible actually has something to say about this, and it describes the very scenes we are seeing today:
“And upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity…men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth” Luke 21:25, 26.
“For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom” Matthew 7:7.
“And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death” Luke 21:16.
“And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another” Matthew 24:10.
“Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold” Matthew 24:12.
What has caused love and peace to banish from the earth resulting in an increase in war? Iniquity! The issue is sin. The causes are lawlessness and a rejection of morality. Today, men are reaping the consequences of rejecting God’s law. We have abandoned not only the Lord, but also His clear instruction for us.
Despite all of the technological advancements in civilization, one would think that in this modern era we were headed towards a time of peace and harmony. Unfortunately, Bible prophecy tells us that our world is on the path to total depravity and barbarism. We are seeing a return of the sins that caused the judgments of God to fall upon the infamous societies of the past – the days of Noah, Sodom, and Babylon (See Revelation 17:5; Matthew 24:37; Luke 17:28-30).
And the Man of Sin (2 Thessalonians 2:3), whose policy is to promote lawlessness, is trying to abolish war. Unbelievable! This is what is most remarkable about Pope Francis’ plan. We must first abolish sin before we can end war. The path of sin and lawlessness will only bring conflict, injustice, riots, murders, anarchy, and disaster to all of our societies.
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear … The way of peace they have not known, And there is no justice in their ways; They have made themselves crooked paths; Whoever takes that way shall not know peace.” Isaiah 59:2, 8.
Before our world reaches the point of no return, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12) must be proclaimed louder and clearer than they have been. Before society completely disintegrates and falls to pieces, those caught up in sin and iniquity must be reached with God’s last message of mercy. God’s people must pray and work for souls in the hopes that some can turn to Jesus before it’s too late. God brought the Adventist Movement into being at precisely the right time to complete this mission right now.
