Should Seventh-day Adventists Follow the Bunny or the Bible?

Given what rabbits symbolized in ancient pagan religious worship services, the recurring appearance of Easter bunny rabbits in Seventh-day Adventist churches and institutions should be cause for concern. We are supposed to be a prophetic movement that rejects pagan traditions and human inventions and looks to the word of God as our ultimate authority. As people aspiring to become members of the Remnant Church, our duty is to embrace the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus (Revelation 12:17; 14:12; 22:14).

How can we tell Sunday-keepers that they are not acting in accordance with God’s will if we embrace white bunnies and Easter eggs in our churches, for which there is no scriptural authority? Nowhere in the Bible, either in the Old or New Testament, can you find a time when God allowed His people to embrace these things. According to all evidence, these eggs and rabbits were clearly part of a pagan fertility celebration that included “lavish sex rituals” and “orgies” performed in honor of false gods. [2]

The pagan nations that surrounded Israel incorporated these same rituals into their worship of pagan deities. When God led Israel into the land of Canaan, He warned them not to follow the Canaanites’ traditions.

“When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land; Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods. What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.” Deuteronomy 12:29-32.

According to these instructions given to God’s people, Seventh-day Adventists should avoid religious celebrations with deep-rooted pagan origins, such as Sunday worship. There is no biblical support for Easter bunnies, Easter eggs or Sunday worship. Rather than asking, “What will the kids say?” we should instead inquire, “What did God say?” If we embrace human traditions, especially those that stem from pagan sexual ceremonies, the following words will, unfortunately, apply to such displays and celebrations:
