Below is an interview we did with Roger Maniccia, a gospel medical missionary evangelist from Tennessee. At the end of the interview is a downloadable link to a free copy of his new book.
Andy Roman: You recently wrote a book called “The Gospel Health Message: Healing from Sin Sickness.” With so many books on the subject already available, what was your burden in taking on this project?
Roger Maniccia: We are in a war against the Devil. We live in a most solemn and grave time; one of immense importance in earth’s history. God’s professed people are literally ill-prepared for the time of tribulation that is soon to come upon this earth. God’s people are to be the light of the world. We have the health message, yet we turn to the world for wisdom, follow worldly health practices, and worse, receive care from worldly doctors and hospitals. This is an utter disgrace.
The purpose of the treatise is to give an introduction to (a review of) the biblical principles of health in regards to “Covid”, masks, social distancing, and vaccinations; most importantly, to vindicate the view of God’s character falsely held by people today.
And Roman: Is there a connection between health, the preaching of the gospel, and end-time prophecy?
Roger Maniccia: Jesus states in Matthew 24:7-8 that there shall be pestilences in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. More importantly, when Adam and Eve sinned, death entered upon the human family. Disease is one of the manifestations of death, an impairment of life. Exodus 15:26 clearly states the cause of disease/death is the violation of God’s law, which we call sin. To violate the health laws is to violate the sixth commandment; thou shall not kill, which includes impairing your body.
The key to health is a personal relationship with Jesus, our great Physician. So the gospel and the health message are interwoven and intertwined. Jesus in the healing of the paralytic in Matt 9:1-8, associated disease and sin together, a fact that cannot be denied.
Health can only be obtained by/through the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ. Just as when Jesus walked the earth, He demonstrated His power to heal people, so Jesus has the same power today to heal us as our Great High Priest in the most holy place.
Regarding the end times, Revelation 18:23 speaks of Babylon in the following way: “For thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries (pharmakeia) were all nations deceived.”
Andy Roman: In times of pandemics, should we turn to the world for wisdom, turn to God’s counsels for health, or do both?
Roger Maniccia: As a people, we should be rooted and grounded in the truth, the Bible. As discussed/shown in the article, the Bible has many references to health laws. Further, other people such as Sister White were given further details concerning the health laws which were communicated periodically, such as “The Ministry of Healing,” and Julius Gilbert White in “Abundant Health.” We have the health message. Just as it is blasphemy and apostasy to turn from the gospel, so it is similarly to turn from the health message stated above to another source(s).
Andy Roman: What are your thoughts about hospital mergers between Catholics and Seventh-day Adventists?
Roger Maniccia: When the church loses its first love, apostasy is to follow. I would prefer to concentrate our efforts on the gospel. Once people accept the gospel and are restored and converted, these issues go away.
Andy Roman: What final words of encouragement do you have for us regarding the medical missionary work – the right arm of the Third Angel’s Message?
Roger Maniccia: The medical missionary work does not supersede the gospel.
“In the work of the gospel the Lord uses different instrumentalities, and nothing is to be allowed to separate these instrumentalities. Never should a sanitarium be established as an enterprise independent of the church. Our physicians are to unite with the work of the ministers of the gospel. Through their labors souls are to be saved, that the name of God may be magnified.”
“Medical missionary work is in no case to be divorced from the gospel ministry. The Lord has specified that the two shall be as closely connected as the arm is with the body. Without this union neither part of the work is complete. The medical missionary work is the gospel in illustration.”
“But God did not design that the medical missionary work should eclipse the work of the third angel’s message. The arm is not to become the body. The third angel’s message is the gospel message for these last days, and in no case is it to be overshadowed by other interests and made to appear an unessential consideration. When in our institutions anything is placed above the third angel’s message, the gospel is not there the great leading power” (Testimonies, Vol. 6, p. 240-241).
Our work is not to make healthy sinners, but converted sinners (getting one’s name in the Lambs Book of Life, the first Angel’s message). Revelation Chapters 13 and 14 foretell of a tribulation that is soon to come upon this world, the seven last plagues. What assurance does one have that Jesus will keep them from these plagues? By their relationship with Jesus today as their Saviour, High Priest, and Physician. The means by which one enjoys health through obedience to the health laws and their relationship with Jesus today, will provide the foundation for them to be overcomers during the tribulation to come.
