With more than a million daily readers, The Times newspaper is Colombia’s most widely read national daily newspaper. [1] On January 16, 2023, The Times published an article titled “The 10 Commandments of God to Stay Away from Sin.” The article described how God gave the 10 Commandments to Moses on Mt. Sinai. Additionally, it said that Jesus upheld this same moral code both through His teachings and through His own personal example. The Times even quoted Pope John Paul II as saying that the Ten Commandments were proof of God’s sovereignty. The only problem is that the newspaper published the wrong version of the 10 Commandments. They reprinted the version modified by Rome rather than the commandments given to us by God in the Bible.
Regarding the Sabbath, which is the Fourth Commandment of the Decalogue, The Times newspaper published the following:
#3. You will sanctify the holidays – This commandment recalls the sanctity of Sunday, a day that should be dedicated to common worship and the word. [2]
You cannot find a single passage in the Bible that claims or even suggests that God has switched His holy day from Saturday to Sunday. On the contrary, all the evidence shows that “the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God” (Exodus 20:10) and “the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day” (Matthew 12:8). So who changed the day of worship if not God? The Roman Catholic Church acknowledges that it is to blame for this transformation.
Cardinal Gibbons said the following:
“You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify” (The Faith of Our Fathers, p. 111, 1893 edition).
The Catholic Press of Sydney, Australia, published the following:
“Sunday is a Catholic institution, and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles … From beginning to end of Scripture, there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first” (Catholic Press, August 25, 1900).
In his book, “Plain Talk About the Protestantism of Today,” Monsignor Segur said the following:
“It was the Catholic Church, which, by the authority of Jesus Christ, has transferred this rest to Sunday in remembrance of the resurrection of our Lord. Thus the observance of Sunday by the Protestants is an homage they pay, in spite of themselves, to the authority of the [Catholic] Church.” (Plain Talk About the Protestantism of Today, p. 225).
There is no support in the Bible for Sunday worship. This indicates that there is no divine mandate for Sunday observance. Sadly, a false day of worship has been substituted for the real Sabbath day, which is Saturday. Christians are not required to observe Sunday. There is no commandment from God. Therefore, it is not sacred and should be abandoned, and the seventh-day Sabbath should be restored to its rightful place, both in the hearts of the people and in the practice of the church.
“If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.” Isaiah 58:13, 14.
