“Light has been given me that the cities will be filled with confusion, violence, and crime, and that these things will increase till the end of this earth’s history” (Testimonies, Vol. 7, p. 84).
With the recent massacres taking place in our communities, we are seeing the kind of civil unrest that we were warned about in God’s word. TheHill.com reported the following on May 8, 2023: “Seven shootings over the weekend, including a massacre at a Dallas-area outlet mall, brought the total number of mass shootings in the U.S. this year [to] over 200.” [1]
Unfortunately, the love that God desires to see in His children has turned cold, and today messages of hate and division from people on all sides are being advanced. We are on the brink of civilization, and all the peace and security that we take for granted are disappearing. Tensions have soared to frightening levels in this country, and what is needed right now are calls for peace, love, healing, reconciliation, and righteousness. But instead, many continue to fan the flames of hate and division.
“The unbelieving world will soon have something to think of besides their dress and appearance; and as their minds are torn from these things by distress and perplexity, they will have nothing to turn to.” (Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 268).
People do not understand human nature or the word of God. The biblical doctrine of sin and the increasing depravity of human nature reveal that our world will only get worse, not better:
“But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” 2 Timothy 3:13.
The Bible does not teach us that a perfect utopian society will be formed in this world of sin. Instead, evil will abound:
“And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.” 1 John 5:19.
Anarchy prevails:
“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” Matthew 24:12.
Distress of nations will be seen:
“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring.” Luke 21:25.
The perils of the last days are upon us:
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent (no self-control), fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” 2 Timothy 3:1-4.
God’s word makes it abundantly clear that society has descended into lawlessness, from the top to the bottom. The episodes of rage and frustration have steadily been increasing across the nation, and the acts of anarchy and violence are only going to get worse. The number of crimes, riots, looting, and shootings, unfortunately, will only increase. Bible prophecy has been warning that these things are coming for a long time, and now they are starting to unfold before our very eyes:
“Once more the inhabitants of the earth were presented before me; and again everything was in the utmost confusion. Strife, war, and bloodshed, with famine and pestilence, raged everywhere. Other nations were engaged in this war and confusion. War caused famine. Want and bloodshed caused pestilence. And then men’s hearts failed them for fear, ‘and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth’.” (Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 268).
“The time of trouble has already begun. We hear continually of riots and accidents, of murders and robberies. Human life is no longer safe unless under the protection of God.” (Manuscript Release, Vol. 21, p. 101).
So, do we have any hope? There is, indeed, but God requires effort on our part:
“A storm is coming, relentless in its fury. Are we prepared to meet it? We need not say: The perils of the last days are soon to come upon us. Already they have come. We need now the sword of the Lord to cut to the very soul and marrow of fleshly lusts, appetites, and passions … Now is the time to put forth earnest effort to overcome the natural tendencies of the carnal heart. Our efforts, our self-denial, our perseverance, must be proportionate to the infinite value of the object of which we are in pursuit. Only by overcoming as Christ overcame shall we win the crown of life” (Testimonies, Vol. 8, p. 315).
