The Times Leader is a daily newspaper in Pennsylvania that published an article on September 21, 2023, titled “Blue Laws are Obsolete—but had their Virtues.” The article was basically promoting the opinion that Blue Laws were beneficial and brought a sense of peace, quiet, and well-being to the community. Additionally, it was stated that blue laws allowed people to attend church on Sundays. In other words, the secular media is once again promoting the idea that laws restricting Sunday activities to support religious observances on that day are good for society.
The Tribune-Democrat reported:
• “Once upon a time, life was pretty quiet in Pennsylvania on Sundays. This was mostly the result of so-called ‘blue laws’ that prohibited many different types of activity on Sunday so that people could rest and turn their attention to religious observance.” [1]
• “It was only in 1978 that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that most blue laws were unenforceable, and in the decades since, Sundays have become more and more like any other day.” [1]
• “No question about it, the ability to shop and carry out other types of transactions on a Sunday has certain advantages. But it’s hard not to feel that something has been lost when there is not a day in the week where the pace of life slows, we set aside the busyness that characterizes much of our lives, and we focus on our own well-being, or that of our friends or family.” [1]
• “Blue laws may be obsolete, in some cases laughably so — no one seriously thinks anyone should be prevented from dribbling a basketball in their driveway on a Sunday anymore, or be stopped from mowing the grass. But those blue laws, and the peace and quiet they enforced, were not without their virtues.” [1]
The news media has become the marketing department of Rome because they are essentially helping to disseminate the wine of Babylon. The purpose of the message is to permanently imprint on people’s minds that Sunday is a day of rest and worship. Even though the newspaper claims that the Blue Laws are obsolete, they are actually planting the seeds for their eventual resurgence. The dragon’s spirit will also be revived when Sunday is restored.
“While men are sleeping, Satan is actively arranging matters so that the Lord’s people may not have mercy or justice. The Sunday movement is now making its way in darkness. The leaders are concealing the true issue, and many who unite in the movement do not themselves see whither the undercurrent is tending. Its professions are mild and apparently Christian, but when it shall speak it will reveal the spirit of the dragon” (Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 452).

Tom Magnusson says
He isn’t wrong. Though the wrong day was chosen, blue laws did have their virtue. A day off to spend time with family and not focus on consumerism is good no matter what the day. It is the rich spiritual blessing that is missed in making that day any other than the 7th day Sabbath and that is more important than the physical rest aspect.
Keith says
The most successful lies, are those closest to the truth. Any day of rest is beneficial, but only one was created by God and cannot be undone but by God Himself. Calling for people to take a day of rest is and will be beneficial to all who would choose to do so. Mandating that people take a day of rest other than the one God has appointed, is a direct challenge to His authority. Obstinate rebellion against one of His commands.
1Sa 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
