Kirk Franklin is a Grammy Award-winning American gospel musician, singer, songwriter, choir director, and concert performer who helped revolutionize the gospel music industry with his blend of contemporary R&B, hip-hop, and traditional gospel music. Franklin is also a popular figure in Adventist circles and has led choirs in Adventist churches [1], spoken to our Adventist youth [2] and performed at our church-owned institutions. [3] Without a doubt, he has had a significant impact on the activities that we observe in many of our worship services, with the dancing and dynamic music.
Recently, Kirk Franklin, a married man, twerked with a female gospel singer on stage at his sold-out “gospel” concert. These are the modern entertainers who claim they are doing all this in the name of Jesus. This is not different from what the world is doing, but it’s worse because these people profess to be serving Christ. This act was done publicly and is shameful and disrespectful toward all those who have ever given him access to Adventism. None of this was done in service or honor to God.
Unfortunately, too many Seventh-day Adventists admire Kirk Franklin and follow him and his music. However, there has to be some kind of moral boundary when it comes to our beliefs and standards, and once it is crossed, we simply have to let go of that person and let them be. Modern gospel music is becoming so worldly, including the clothes, the dance movements, and the elaborate stage shows. How can anyone imagine that this kind of pitiful display has absolutely anything to do with the worship of a holy God?
“Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.” 1 Peter 2:12.
