On Sunday, December 22, 2024, American Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York told Fox News during an interview that the world is changing for the better, especially in the United States. He expressed that Americans are tired of the idea that religion is superstitious or toxic and should remain private. Cardinal Dolan stated that religion should be in the public space. He also said that faith and religion are shrouded in mystery, but it is the responsibility of the church to explain those mysteries.
Ellen G. White wrote extensively about a false religious awakening in the last days, describing it as a counterfeit revival orchestrated by Satan to deceive the world and lead to the enforcement of Sunday observance. This false religious awakening will unite Protestantism, spiritualism, and Catholicism in a movement that enforces false worship and suppresses religious liberty.
“Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions. While the former lays the foundation of spiritualism, the latter creates a bond of sympathy with Rome. The Protestants of the United States will be foremost in stretching their hands across the gulf to grasp the hand of spiritualism; they will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power; and under the influence of this threefold union, this country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling on the rights of conscience” (Great Controversy, p. 588).
To discern between genuine and false revivals, we need to thoroughly study the Bible. The standard of truth is God’s Word, not emotional experiences or miraculous signs. Since the Sabbath question will be at the center of the final test, the faithful must resist popular sentiments that go against God’s commandments. This false revival will lead to widespread enforcement of Sunday laws and persecution of those who refuse to conform, setting the stage for the final events before Christ’s return.
“Before the final visitation of God’s judgments upon the earth, there will be among the people of the Lord such a revival of primitive godliness as has not been witnessed since apostolic times. The enemy of souls desires to hinder this work; and before the time for such a movement shall come, he will endeavor to prevent it by introducing a counterfeit” (Great Controversy, p. 464).
