Recently Pope Francis gave a homily during which he stated that “evangelism” is not about “knocking on doors” and declaring truth with a desire to “win an argument.”
During a mass at his residence, Pope Francis declared that evangelism is not “proselytizing” or trying to convert people from one faith to another. Instead, the Pope states that we should “do” and “act” without having to “say.”
What does evangelism mean anyway? It means to share the gospel of Christ. It means to witness to others about the love of Jesus. Even though this does include works of charity, feeding the hungry and clothing the naked, evangelism also includes publicly preaching to others about Christ. We don’t have to try to win any arguments because the arguments have already been won.
The most important event in the history of the universe took place on the cross. On the cross Christ made an atonement to reconcile the human race back into the favor of God. And all those who accept this atonement for sin are pardoned and cleansed and pass from death unto life. If Christ didn’t die then I would have to because sin causes death. (Romans 3:23) Everyone is doomed to die. There is no escape – unless someone is willing to die in our place. The good news is that there was Someone who loved us enough – and that person is Jesus. There is no argument.
The world needs to know this because the cross demonstrates true unconditional love. And it is because men have made merchandise of the gospel and have enslaved the world with a false gospel that the world is in the trouble that’s its in today.
No, friends. We must preach the gospel of Jesus Christ with power more than ever and especially in these times of great uncertainty. For in the Everlasting Gospel of Revelation 14:6-12 is found the answers to all the problems that our world is facing. Yes, even the answers for Pope Francis are also found therein.
