There is a growing feeling among different communities and people who believe that our societies can survive without law enforcement. The idea is gaining ground that people will be better off without police officers. Cities like Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis and others have already promised to reduce funding for law enforcement or to cut it entirely. Calls are also being made to disband police stations altogether.
“The unbelieving world will soon have something to think of besides their dress and appearance (social media); and as their minds are torn from these things by distress and perplexity, they will have nothing to turn to.” (Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 268).
The video above shows how Minneapolis city officials voted to “abolish” their police department. MPD150 is a community advocacy organization in Minneapolis that is leading the way to eliminate law enforcement in their city. [1] They have published a list of people who they believe will be able to do the job of the police once they are disbanded. Notice what they say:
“The people who respond to crises in our community should be the people who are best-equipped to deal with those crises. Rather than strangers armed with guns (police officers), who very likely do not live in the neighborhoods they’re patrolling, we want to create space for more mental health service providers, social workers, victim/survivor advocates, religious leaders, neighbors and friends – all of the people who really make up the fabric of a community – to look out for one another.” [2]
This is based on the assumption that every cop is bad, not just a few. And instead of coming up with new procedures, better training and more accountability, the solution is to eliminate the police force altogether. Defund them and replace them with “social workers.” Why? Because they believe that the police is responsible for all the crime. MPD150 continues saying:
“Cops don’t prevent crime; they cause it, through the ongoing, violent disruption of our communities.” [2]
The truth is that the overwhelming majority of crimes committed are not being carried out by bad cops but by ordinary citizens. So the idea is that if we get rid of the police, then murder, drug use, gangs, mass shootings, terrorism, hatred, domestic violence, rape, prostitution, sex trafficking, theft, kidnapping, assault & battery and other crimes will magically disappear.

People do not understand human nature or the word of God. The biblical doctrine of sin and the increasing depravity of human nature reveal that our world will only get worse, not better. The Bible does not teach us that a perfect Utopian society will be formed in this world of sin. Evil abounds (1 John 5:19). Anarchy prevails (Matthew 24:12). Distress of nations will be seen (Luke 21:25). And in order to maintain some kind of order and justice in a fallen world, we need the police to keep evil under control, at least in its external expressions of civil society (Romans 13:3).
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” 2 Timothy 3:1-4.
“But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” 2 Timothy 3:13.
Every time a mass shooting occurs, who are the first to arrive on the scene? It’s not the social workers, it’s the police. When criminals are robbing a bank, who are we going to call? Victim advocacy groups? What are they going to do? Beg them to stop? Who will investigate the crimes? Who is going to bring criminals to justice? Who will prosecutors and judges use to enforce their arrest warrants? Pastors and church elders? Who is going to maintain civility during lootings and riots? City officials and county commissioners? We don’t think so!
“Once more the inhabitants of the earth were presented before me; and again everything was in the utmost confusion. Strife, war, and bloodshed, with famine and pestilence, raged everywhere. Other nations were engaged in this war and confusion. War caused famine. Want and bloodshed caused pestilence. And then men’s hearts failed them for fear, “and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth.” (Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 268).
For decades we have been told that citizens do not need guns because the police are here to protect us. Well, what are concerned citizens going to do now? They don’t want the military to protect our citizens but it is okay to use the military to protect the citizens of Afghanistan and Iraq. Now they want to abolish law enforcement. They don’t want citizens to be armed and they don’t want you to enforce the law yourself. So basically, the only option is to leave citizens to the mercy of the mob. Where is the justice in all this?

Today they say: “Criminals exist because of the police. If you eliminate the police, you eliminate criminals.” When this doesn’t work, or if it actually has the opposite effect, they will tell us: “Crime really exists because the law exists, if we can get rid of the law, we can get rid of crime.”
“Let the restraint imposed by the divine law be wholly cast aside, and human laws would soon be disregarded … If the law were not binding, why should any fear to transgress? Property would no longer be safe. Men would obtain their neighbor’s possessions by violence; and the strongest would become richest. Life itself would not be respected. The marriage vow would no longer stand as a sacred bulwark to protect the family. He who had the power, would, if he desired, take his neighbor’s wife by violence. The fifth commandment would be set aside with the fourth. Children would not shrink from taking the life of their parents, if by so doing they could obtain the desire of their corrupt hearts. The civilized world would become a horde of robbers and assassins; and peace, rest, and happiness would be banished from the earth.” Great Controversy, p. 585).
This is exactly what we are seeing today. We have serious political and religious ideological differences in the United States. If we eliminate law enforcement, who exists to keep the peace, there will be war and anarchy on the streets because those ideological differences will always exist. If it is a war that people want, eliminating law enforcement will be the surest way to accomplish this.
There will be guerrilla warfare on our streets when the police is gone. Social tensions and deep-seeded divisions in our world are at their highest point. Eliminating law and order will result in people being reduced to the law of the jungle. The carnal sinful hearts of unrestrained men and women would be transformed into savage and “brute beasts” and the “riots” would continue as the Bible says they will.
“Them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities … But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption; and shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time.” 2 Peter 2:10-13.
“The time of trouble has already begun. We hear continually of riots and accidents, of murders and robberies. Human life is no longer safe unless under the protection of God.” (Manuscript Release, Vol. 21, p. 101).
