The University of Southern California’s (USC) Office of Religious Life, located in Los Angeles, CA, sponsored its first ever Queer Interfaith Meeting. This event celebrated “Queerituality,” the “intersections of queerness and spirituality.” [1] The news was reported by USC Annenberg Media, the student-led news media platform that is overseen and funded by the university. USC Annenberg Media reported that Adventists were in attendance and shared their views about how some Adventist churches are more LGBT+ affirming than others. The report stated:
“On Thursday, February 23, the USC University Religious Center held the first Queer Interfaith meeting. They welcomed the students with open arms as their ideas of queerness and spirituality were discussed in a safe space. The meeting focused on finding and exploring the intersections of queerness and spirituality. Students who attended the meeting got a pamphlet labeled ‘queerituality guide’ … While filling in and coloring their ‘queerituality guide’ each member took a turn discussing their beliefs, on both religion and identity.” [1]
“Members of the LGBTQ+ community shared some different churches around the Los Angeles area that are welcoming to the community. ‘I was raised in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, around the Loma Linda area and I experienced more of a conservative version of Adventism that was not affirming towards the LGBT community,’ said sophomore Grace Boyd. ‘I actually found a church in Glendale called the Glendale City Church and I’ve been really impressed how they’re very affirming of the LGBT community. They actually had a conference recently about Adventist LGBT allies and members’.” [1]
Glendale City Church is an official Seventh-day Adventist church that is “proud to be affirming.” This is a statement that openly expresses support, acceptance, and validation of the LGBT+ community. [2] And since the LGBT+ movement is now a recognized component of the ecumenical movement, all church leaders who support and engage in the interfaith movement will be forced to recognize “Queerituality.”
If we have leaders at the highest levels of the church who participate in the ecumenical movement and support ideas like building bridges, removing barriers, interfaith cooperation, shared interests, common witness, eliminating misconceptions, building trust, respecting differences, and urging solidarity with Rome and all the other churches, why not include the LGBT+ interfaith community as well? Once you open the door to interfaith relationships, there is no good reason not to.
If we are already putting aside all of our differences, as the ecumenical movement would have us do, will we also set aside Bible truth when it comes to queer interfaith events? The answer to that question would have to be “yes,” because the only words you ever hear at these interfaith gatherings are words like unity, diversity, inclusion, acceptance, reconciliation, dialogue, joint worship, common cause, friendships, relationships, pluralism, and love. There is a reason for this. It’s all part of a plan.
What about the “truth”? That is one word that you will never hear at these interfaith gatherings. Jesus is truth (John 14:6). God is truth (Exodus 34:6). His Spirit is truth (John 16:13). God’s word is truth (John 17:17). And all we seem to hear at these interfaith events is “love, love, love.” But what about having a love for the truth? Only when we have a love for the truth will we be prevented from being seduced by error.
The truth is the only weapon we have to guard us from error. When we stop using truth as the basis for unity and love, the Bible tells us that we will surely be deceived. We won’t even be able to detect the work of Satan when we start ignoring the truth.
“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12.
Then some will say, “Well, Jesus sat down with sinners, so we need to go and engage people where they are, even if we need to attend these ecumenical events.” Oh, really? That is a mixture of half the truth and absolute error. Jesus did sit down with sinners, but He never sat down with idols or false worship, and He didn’t stay quiet about people’s sins or their false gods.
The greatest messages ever entrusted to mortal man were not given so that we might seek common ground with every belief system in the world. They were given to us so that they could be proclaimed. That is why God gave us as a people certain historic “truths” and pillars of the faith to defend us against error. God gave us fundamental beliefs, not fundamental feelings of emotion. We can’t keep ignoring the truth when engaging the world.
“Satan has devised a state of things whereby the proclamation of the third angel’s message shall be bound about. We must beware of his plans and methods. There must be no toning down of the truth, no muffling of the message for this time. The third angel’s message must be strengthened and confirmed. The eighteenth chapter of Revelation reveals the importance of presenting the truth in no measured terms but with boldness and power … There has been too much beating about the bush in the proclamation of the third angel’s message. The message has not been given as clearly and distinctly as it should have been” (Manuscript 16, 1900).
