Crosswalk.com is a popular online Christian magazine that features daily spiritual articles, resources, and guidance. On April 21, 2023, the Christian website published an article titled, “What is the Sabbath and Is It Still Important Today?” Surprisingly, this article applied to Sunday every single argument and justification provided in the Bible for observing God’s true seventh-day Sabbath, Saturday. The article stated in part:
• “The word ‘Sabbath’ is related to a Hebrew root that means ‘cease’ or ‘stop.’ God commanded His people to cease from their labor, so they could rest, refresh, and refuel.” [1]
• “Since God included the Sabbath in the 10 Commandments, He must have thought it was important.” [1]
• “So it stands to reason we should also honor the 4th commandment to remember the Sabbath.” [1]
• “For physical health and spiritual well-being, we need rest.” [1]
• “God set a healthy rhythm of work and rest for us at creation.” [1]
• “When we set aside Sundays for rest and worship, we follow the healthy rhythm God established for us, and we can start a new week on Monday refreshed instead of exhausted.” [1]
How do you take biblical mandates that apply to the seventh day, or Saturday, and just randomly apply them to Sunday? There is no biblical command to observe Sunday as the Sabbath or to treat it as a replacement for the seventh-day Sabbath. There is also no biblical evidence that the Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday. In fact, the Bible consistently refers to the seventh day of the week, Saturday, as the Sabbath (Mark 2:28). The New Testament records that Jesus and His disciples observed the Sabbath on Saturday (Luke 4:17; Acts 17:2), and there is no indication that they or any of the other early Christians ever observed Sunday as the Sabbath.
The reason why we should keep the seventh day, known as Saturday, is because the Fourth Commandment of the Decalogue says plainly and positively that “the seventh day is the Sabbath” (Ex. 20:8–11). The New Testament also tells us that the women who witnessed Jesus’ death and burial “returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment” (Luke 23:56). Additionally, in Matthew 24:20, Jesus made it abundantly clear that the seventh-day Sabbath was to be observed both during the siege of Jerusalem in 70 AD and during the final abomination of desolation in the last days.
What reasonable excuse can anyone who believes in the Bible possibly give for keeping any other day holy? If “the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it” and commanded that it be kept holy, then why do so many Christians today worship on Sunday? The answer to that question can be found in the book of Leviticus:
“And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.” Leviticus 9:24.
As proof of His acceptance of their offerings and worship, God sent forth a heavenly fire that consumed the burnt offering and the altar in the sight of the people. We are also told in Leviticus 6:13 that this fire that came down from heaven was to be kept burning continually for the daily sacrifice and the burning of incense. This heavenly fire was never to go out.
But unfortunately, even as so many Christians do today, we read in Leviticus 10:1–2 that Nadab and Abihu, sons of Aaron, disregarded God’s commandment and offered “strange fire before the Lord.” They doubtless reasoned (as some do with the Sabbath) that fire was fire, for they could see no difference. But they were wrong, for it is written, “There went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.”
According to Ezekiel 8:16, Sunday worship has always been and will always be a strange fire and an abomination to the Lord. Once again, during the Mark of the Beast crisis, Sunday will be mandated by law as necessary for the worship of God (Revelation 13:16–17). In the face of this impending crisis, let us clearly remember God’s commandment: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

The warning signs are here. God in Him mercy allows us to see what is coming before it happens.

We must rest in Jesus all the time (24/7/365), and not just one day each week. This is “abiding in Jesus”. May this be our experience.
