After surviving two impeachments, numerous federal and state indictments, civil lawsuits, and two assassination attempts, Donald Trump has won his second term as president in one of the most amazing and unlikely comebacks in US political history. In Florida, Trump assured supporters that America had entered a golden age and promised to return the country to its former splendor and supremacy.
Donald Trump also announced that he would govern with a simple motto that says, “Promises made, promises kept.” One of those promises is that he will give Christians unprecedented political power once he is reelected. [1] We are aware that Christian political leaders in the United States are working to get the Ten Commandments, prayer, and Bibles taught in public schools. We also know from inspiration that these efforts will not stop there. According to the Spirit of Prophecy, Sunday laws are connected to those policies.
“In our own country there is much to be done. There are many cities to be entered and warned. Evangelists should be finding their way into all the places where the minds of men are agitated over the question of Sunday legislation and the teaching of religion in the public schools. It is the neglect of Seventh-day Adventists to improve these providential opportunities that is hindering the advancement of the cause” (Testimonies, Vol. 9, p. 51).
Donald Trump has made some statements that are related to Bible prophecy. Trump will make America powerful and great again, which is consistent with the prophetic narrative of Revelation 13. In order for the mark of the beast to be imposed on the entire world, America has to be able to do that from a position of economic and military strength. Trump will no doubt restore this nation’s strength and power, which includes his promise to give unprecedented power to the churches.
Some have argued that Dr. Ben Carson will be a watchman in the Trump administration and warn him against the Sunday law. Unfortunately, Dr. Carson is one of the authors of Project 2025 and actually wrote Chapter 15. [2] Project 2025 is the Protestant churches playbook to bring back the union of church and state to ensure an evangelical Christian vision (with Sunday rest provisions) from day one of a Republican presidency.
The New York Times said the following regarding Project 2025 and Donald Trump:
“Former president Donald J. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he had nothing to do with Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s conservative policy initiative to reshape the federal government. Mr. Trump has said that he has not read its proposals and does not know who is behind it … The people behind Project 2025 are no strangers to the former president. The Heritage Foundation’s president, Kevin D. Roberts, and a co-founder, Edwin J. Feulner, have each personally met with Mr. Trump. And the analysis of the Project 2025 playbook and its 307 authors and contributors revealed that well over half of them had been in Mr. Trump’s administration or on his campaign or transition teams.” [3]
Therefore, regardless of who is in the White House, prophecy will be fulfilled, which means that we are in for some challenging times. Liberty of conscience will certainly be under threat by both the left and the right. While one side will eventually impose apostate Christian policies that are in conflict with God’s word, the other will impose a liberal agenda that is godless and anti-biblical. There were immediate concerns with a Harris administration and more long-term concerns with a Trump administration, even if he promotes a conservative agenda.
How do we respond to the 2024 US presidential election? God gives His people instructions in the Book of Jeremiah on how to behave while they were in exile in Babylon. Even though they were living outside their native country, God commanded them to pray for their political leaders and to look out for the welfare of the nation, because in their peace, they would have peace. Babylon wasn’t their home, just like this world is not our home. But they were commanded to work for the benefit of those with whom they were living, even though that wasn’t their home.
“Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon; Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them; Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished. And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.” Jeremiah 29:4-7.
As Seventh-day Adventists, our primary loyalty is to God and His kingdom. However, even though we are strangers and foreigners in this world, through the power of the everlasting gospel of Revelation 14 and prayer, we can work to make a positive difference in our communities, and be a living testimony of God’s transforming grace to our political leaders.
