When religious organizations can partner with government entities to push for the celebration of Family Day on Sunday, this is a sign that our world is heading for trouble. Recently, we have seen these kinds of partnerships between church and state to address social, economic, and environmental issues. Now there seems to be a growing consensus to improve community relationships by setting aside Sunday as the day for our families.
The Association of Evangelical Ministers, together with political leaders from the Brazilian city of Timbo, sponsored a special event to honor the families. This event was held on Sunday, August 27, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. These kinds of close partnerships between church and state to support a Sunday morning event, when evangelical churches typically hold worship services, should raise questions about whether the government is endorsing Sunday.
Timbo City Hall reported the following:
“The churches of Timbo got together and on the 27th of August, Sunday, with the support of the City Hall, they promoted the Family Day.” [1]
The local news gave the following report:
“The Timbo community gathered last Sunday, the 27th, to participate in the Family Day. The special day was conceived and promoted by AME Timbo (Association of Evangelical Ministers) with support from the City Hall. The event took place from 9 am to 1 pm, at Henry Paul Park, with activities for the whole family. With an open and free event for the community, each participating group took a sweet or savory dish to participate in this special moment of fraternization. In addition, participants enjoyed various dance, theater and music performances, book distribution, clothing donation and, of course, a delicious breakfast.” [2]
Some will defend the government’s cooperation with the evangelical churches on this occasion by claiming that it provided a much wider benefit for the community as a whole rather than just helping the churches. However, whenever Sunday rest is involved, we know from inspiration that the great deceiver is always at work to exalt the false idol Sabbath before the people.
“Not a move has been made in exalting the idol sabbath, in bringing around Sunday observance through legislation, but Satan has been behind it, and has been the chief worker” (Bible Commentary, Vol. 7, p. 977).
The Sunday-keeping evangelical churches will most definitely play a major role in working with the government to promote Sunday. Church and state will come together to honor the false day of worship, as was seen recently in Brazil:
“The dignitaries of church and state will unite to bribe, persuade, or compel all classes to honor the Sunday” (Great Controversy, p. 592).
“The enforcement of Sundaykeeping on the part of Protestant churches is an enforcement of the worship of the papacy” (Great Controversy, p. 448).
