We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg with the fallout of Hollywood film producer and movie executive Harvey Weinstein. Over 30 actresses, models, and personal assistants accuse him of a variety of sexual crimes that include harassment, assault and rape. More and more women from the movie industry are coming out almost every day since the first allegations surfaced. When all is said and done, his victims will number in the hundreds.
Some of Hollywood’s biggest names have publicly come out and condemned him and have expressed shock at how a sexual predator could have gotten away with this kind of behavior for so long. The reality is that Harvey Weinstein is just one of many sexual predators who thrive in the Hollywood movie studio culture. Harvey Weinstein’s story is not an isolated incident. There is a long list of Hollywood insiders who have been accused of being serial, sexual abusers such as Bill Cosby, Alfred Hitch, Charlie Sheene, Bryan Singer and many more.
One of Hollywoods’s unspoken secret is that abuse runs rampant in the movie industry. This is nothing new. American pop-culture icon Marilyn Monroe said it best when she described Hollywood as one big “overcrowded brothel.” Back in the early days of the film industry many actresses had to sleep their way into a movie role. Landing a leading role in a movie would almost guarantee a life of fame and fortune. Movie producers were in powerful positions to manipulate, corrupt and prey on the young and vulnerable.
Harvey Weinstein proves that not much has changed in today’s Hollywood movie culture. And to somehow suggest that manipulation only runs in one direction would be dishonest. Sometimes the manipulation goes both ways. How many actresses are also trying to use the movie producers as much as the movie executives use them? There are millions of dollars to be made. Manipulation very often works both ways. No one side owns the market on abuse. In Hollywood there’s enough blame going around on both sides.
In the case of Harvey Weinstein, he was treated as a god. Top actress Meryl Steep christened Weinstein on live television, calling him “god” during a award ceremony. And that says it all, coming from those who work in the industry. Hollywood producers can either make or break your career. They play “god” and are treated as such in the cesspool of sewage that flows in the movie capitol of the world. The “star power” that Hollywood producers give to actors and performers goes way beyond the movies. Being an A-list movie star has political clout and celebrity status which can be used to shape our culture and set trends in fashion and art.
Hollywood moguls know this and all that power goes to their heads. And this sexual predator was encouraged and enabled by the culture in Hollywood to continue his abuse on women. The movie industry created this monster. Everyone knew of Harvey’s sexual indiscretions because he openly boasted about the actresses he had sexual encounters with. But nobody would dare risk their careers, their fame or fortunes by speaking out against the “gods.”
This is what allowed the harassment, the bullying and the rapes to continue. It was all a sick obsession that went on for over 30 years. How many actresses and actors were aware of the abuse, but for the sake of their careers didn’t say anything? Now everyone in Hollywood has turned against him. But where was the shock and the protest for all the years they turned a blind eye to his abuse? All of these women actresses who once sought Weinstein as a strategy to promote their personal careers are now heaping accusations and condemnations on him. Now they are speaking out since they know his career and influence is gone. But why didn’t they speak out for all these years? Such hypocrisy!
There is no question that Harvey Weinstein is a sick, demonic, sexual predator who needs to be held accountable for the 30 plus years of abusing his power for his personal perversions. But now, lets not for a moment pretend that he is the only one. There are many, many more degenerates swimming in that cesspool of sin. They all need to be called out. The insiders know who they are. It’s time to drain the sewer that has been spewing out sinful smut and stink upon our society.
