In what is being called one of the biggest climate protests, Protestants and Jesuits will be marching in London on Saturday, June 22, 2024, to raise awareness about the urgent need to address climate change. The climate march is also designed to demand action from governments to implement stronger environmental regulations. Without a doubt, the climate change movement is bridging the gap between Catholics and Protestants and fostering a profound sense of solidarity among both groups. Influential figures like Pope Francis, through his encyclical Laudato Si’, have galvanized Catholics and Protestants alike, emphasizing the moral imperative to care for the Earth.
On June 11, 2024, the Catholic magazine The Tablet published an article titled “Christian Groups Join ‘Restore Nature Now’ March.” The article discussed the ways in which the Jesuits are working with different Christian climate groups.
• “Christian charities are planning for one of the biggest gatherings of campaigners for nature and climate that the UK has seen, the ‘restore nature now’ march in London on Saturday 22 June.” [1]
• “An ecumenical service, ‘creation cries out’, has been organized for 11am at the Jesuit Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception at Farm Street. The service is a collaboration between A Rocha UK, Green Christian, Christian Climate Action, Operation Noah and others. Included is a children’s outdoor nature-based church.” [1]
• “Columban Missionaries, Sisters of St Joseph of Peace, Laudato Si Movement, Westminster Justice and Peace and Eco-Congregation Scotland are among those planning to join the march to Downing Street.” [1]
• “The march, both a celebration of UK nature and a protest for urgent political action on the nature and climate emergencies, is backed by a wide-range of nature, wildlife and climate groups and campaigners.” [1]
• “The aim is to bring tens of thousands of people together to call on all political parties to take action to restore nature and tackle climate change in the UK.” [1]
Protestants and Catholics are increasingly coming together on common causes, showcasing a remarkable unity that transcends traditional denominational boundaries. This convergence is particularly evident in their collaborative efforts on ecumenism and Sunday rest. However, in this specific partnership, Protestants are coming together with the Jesuits to unite powerfully around the climate message and to petition political leaders to pass laws to “restore nature and tackle climate change.”
Throughout history, the Jesuits have often been involved in various initiatives worldwide. In this instance, the Jesuits will be hosting an ecumenical service focusing on climate action while downplaying the core beliefs and practices of God’s word. Today, Protestants are protesting climate change instead of emphasizing the authority of the Bible over church traditions, challenging the authority of the Papacy, or calling out the moral and ethical corruption in the church. This indicates that the number of true Protestants in the world today is remarkably low, and that Protestantism—which was once defined as a united protest against the doctrinal distortions of Rome—is all but gone.
“Protestants have tampered with and patronized popery; they have made compromises and concessions which papists themselves are surprised to see, and fail to understand. Men are closing their eyes to the real character of Romanism, and the dangers to be apprehended from her supremacy. The people need to be aroused to resist the advances of this most dangerous foe to civil and religious liberty” (Great Controversy, p. 566).
“While the Protestant world is making concessions to Rome, and danger is increasing on every hand, let us arouse to comprehend the situation, and to see the contest before us in its true bearings. Let the watchmen lift up the voice, and give with clearness the message which is present truth for this time. “For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?” Let us show the people where we are in prophetic history, and seek to arouse the spirit of true Protestantism, awaking the world to a sense of the value of the religious liberty they have so long enjoyed.” (Signs of the Times, November 28, 1900).

John S. says
“Let none deceive themselves. The papacy that Protestants are now so ready to honor is the same that ruled the world in the days of the Reformation, when men of God stood up, at the peril of their lives, to expose her iniquity. She possesses the same pride and arrogant assumption that lorded it over kings and princes, and claimed the prerogatives of God. Her spirit is no less cruel and despotic now than when she crushed out human liberty and slew the saints of the Most High.” GC 571
