The coronavirus health crisis is testing the powers and limits of civil government. In times of emergency when everyone is scared, nervous and confused there is a much greater risk of seeing our religious and civil rights threatened. During a pandemic, the temptation by those in authority to take severe action is much more likely. The nations are responding to the coronavirus crisis in different ways.
Presdient Donal Trump today announced a “National Emergency” and has dedicated $50 billion in federal resources to combat the coronavirus. [1] A few hours later President Trump declared Sunday, March 15th to be a National Day of Prayer for America to ask God for “protection and strength.” Two days ago the UN’s World Health Organization also declared the coronavirus to be a world-wide “pandemic.” [2]

In China where the coronavirus has already claimed 700 lives, residents are being dragged away into isolation by the authorities against their will. Men in protective suits are using force to quarantine people suspected of being infected.

In parts of Italy there are mandatory lock-downs as police patrol empty streets with drones. Those who do venture outside are subject to detainment and questioning. If the police determine that you do not have a valid reason to be outdoors, they have the power to warn you, issue you a fine, or arrest you. [3]
Here in the United States the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has already issued a directive for the coronavirus. This document sets forth the actions that public health authorities can take which include orders for isolation, quarantine, travel restriction and social distancing. These public health orders are NOT just recommendations.
According to the CDC document, under the section called “Definitions Used in this Guidance,” we read the following about “Pubic Health Orders:”
“Public health orders are legally enforceable directives issued under the authority of a relevant federal, state, or local entity that, when applied to a person or group, may place restrictions on the activities undertaken by that person or group, potentially including movement restrictions or a requirement for monitoring by a public health authority, for the purposes of protecting the public’s health. Federal, state, or local public health orders may be issued to enforce isolation, quarantine or conditional release.” [4]
Make no mistake. In America, if you break any coronavirus order issued by local or federal health authorities you could be dragged off to jail. Authorities have already warned a Missouri family that if they continue to violate quarantine orders, they will enforce those orders by law. [5]
Our government is not just warning people to wash their hands and avoid unnecessary travel. Our leaders are not just canceling air travel to Europe. The full force of the federal government can take much more severe action at any time during an emergency. In the name of public safety they can prohibit gatherings such as church events and other activities. In the name of protecting its citizens they can prohibit all domestic travel. Food, water and fuel can be rationed.
And in the name of containing a viral pandemic, the strong arm of our federal government can issue an extreme public health order placing everyone under quarantine. This is basically a type of house arrest for people who haven’t committed any crime. The days of tyranny are drawing near in America because we are told that soon all these pandemics and disasters will be attributed to the transgression of the Sunday-Sabbath.
“It will be declared that the nation is offending God by the violation of the Sunday-Sabbath, that this sin has brought calamities which will not cease until Sunday observance shall be strictly enforced, and that those who present the claims of the fourth commandment, thus destroying reverence for Sunday, are troublers of the nation, preventing its restoration to divine favor and temporal prosperity” (The Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 4, p. 408).
“And he (USA) spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.” Revelation 13:11, 12.
