Good health demands exposure to an adequate amount of sunlight, fresh air, and exercise every day. We have always known this, but our faith is only affirmed when modern science confirms what God has already said. Science, with its relentless search for knowledge and understanding, increasingly aligns with the timeless wisdom found in God’s Word.
An article titled “Daycares in Finland Grew Forests, And It Changed Kids’ Immune Systems” appeared in Science Alert on June 10, 2024. It stated that spending time in nature will greatly boost your immune system in just one month. The article reported the following:
• “When daycare workers rolled out a lawn, planted forest, and allowed children to care for crops in planter boxes, the diversity of microbes in the guts and on the skin of the young kids appeared healthier in a very short space of time.” [1]
• “Compared to other city kids who play in standard urban daycares with yards of pavement, tile, and gravel, 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds at these greened-up daycare centers in Finland showed increased T-cells and other important immune markers in their blood within 28 days.” [1]
• “Among kids who got outside – playing in the dirt, the grass, and among the trees – an increase in a microbe called gammaproteobacteria appeared to boost the skin’s immune defense, as well as increase helpful immune secretions in the blood and reduce the content of interleukin-17A, which is connected to immune-transmitted diseases.” [1]
• “This supports the assumption that contact with nature prevents disorders in the immune system, such as autoimmune diseases and allergies,” said Sinkkonen. [1]
Here we can see the fulfillment of the health message that God has given us. 157 years ago, the prophet of the Lord revealed the following instructions, and if heeded, humanity would greatly benefit from the principles taught in God’s word.
“There are many who complain of suffering much with debility and nameless complaints, when all they need is to become intelligent in regard to their own course of action to prevent disease. Students commit a great sin against themselves in shutting themselves up within enclosed walls to sedentary employment, or to study without indulging themselves in the luxury of spending hours daily in the fresh out-of-door air, cold or warm. Men and women must have plenty of sunlight and plenty of fresh air if they expect health” (Letter 15, 1867).
The divinely inspired counsels from God have the potential to not only foster physical health and longevity, but they could change our world dramatically by prioritizing holistic living and community health. Once again, science is only demonstrating the enduring wisdom and practical benefit of following heaven’s divine plan for health.

It was really gorgeous this Sabbath morning at the Huntington Reservoir…..glad I grew up Gen x when we spent most of the day outside finding things to do rather than inside on the internet and social media (which didn’t exist in the super 70’s & big hair 80’s).
