“They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea” Isaiah 11:9.
The pro-life movement is losing the battle to protect the lives of innocent children. This is partly because we are living in a culture of death that continues to decline. A new survey shows that the vast majority of voters in America are opposed to overturning Roe vs. Wade.
- 71% of all American voters want to keep abortion legal
- 88% of registered Democrats want to keep abortion legal
- 76% of registered Independents want to keep abortion legal
- 52% of registered Republicans want to keep abortion legal
We should be alarmed by this new poll. The pro-life movement has been fighting strong and giving a voice to the voiceless for so long, but it seems they are losing ground in this battle. According to these new numbers only 23% of Americans want to overturn Roe vs. Wade.
This is one of the reasons why we long for the Second Coming of Christ. When Jesus comes He will ultimately establish a kingdom of peace where there will be no more death, no more bloodshed, no more violence, no more destruction of life, no more cruelty and no more suffering. This is the glorious future for God’s children. We will dwell in perfect peace and safety when Jesus returns:
“Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise” Isaiah 60:18.
This is what the church has earnestly longed for. We cannot be part of God’s kingdom of peace unless we become a peaceable people in our practices and in our public witness. Seventh-day Adventists have been too passive and silent on the subject of abortion. This is the second reason why the pro-life movement is losing ground. In our advocacy on the Sabbath truth (4th Commandment) we have neglected to work towards a more tangible peace for the most defenseless – the unborn children who are being aborted. This is also defending and upholding the Law of God – “Thou shalt no kill” (6th Commandment). We are a commandment-keeping people (Revelation 12:17; 14:12; 22:14), and not politicians, therefore we must uphold ALL of God’s law (James 2:10-12) and not just the part of God’s law that is political expedient.
Our world needs a witness for peace at this great moment of world’s history. Can Seventh-day Adventist really sit on the fence on this issue? We live in a world where a culture of death and war prevails. Genocide is being practiced against millions of innocents, and can we really remain neutral on the issue of the sanctity of unborn human life? “Thou shalt no kill.” This command is an integral part of the revelation of God’s will for humanity. We need to seriously apply our medical work, our educational work, our ministerial work and any other public witness and voice against the violence of abortion, in the name peace and in the name of God’s kingdom of peace!
Seventh-day Adventists are very vocal and outspoken about other issues. Can we not raise a voice against this violence too? We must be a public witness for the preservation of human life, and a protest against the killing of human life. We are a commandment-keeping people, and one day if faithful, we will live in communion with the God of peace.
“And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” Revelation 21:3, 4.
