The “most respected” news outlet in the country, India Today [1], reported on September 26, 2023, that the Baptist Church Council of India has criticized the Indian Prime Minister for his nationwide cleanliness drive, which is scheduled for Sunday, October 1, 2023. Baptists are urging all Christian institutions and people to boycott the Prime Minister’s initiative and to promote the importance of keeping Sundays holy by not working.
India Today reported the following:
• “The Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC) has voiced its disapproval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for a nationwide cleanliness drive scheduled for October 1, a day traditionally regarded as a day of rest and worship for Christians. The CBCC firmly advocates that there should be ‘no work on Sunday‘.” [2]
• “While CBCC acknowledges that cleanliness is a universally commendable ideal, it firmly asserts that “Cleanliness is not above godliness!” [2]
• “They have instructed their respective members to abstain from participating in the cleanliness drive as a symbol of their discontent with the Government of India’s ‘repeated attempts to disrupt Christian faith and practices in the country’.” [2]
• “Furthermore, CBCC has appealed to the frontal organizations under its jurisdiction and Christian leaders nationwide to unite in defense of their faith. Citing religious scripture, the council emphasized the importance of observing Sunday as a day of worship and rest, drawing from Exodus 20:8 and Acts 5:29. They firmly stated, ‘We cannot violate the decree of the living God to keep the Sabbath day/Sunday holy.’ CBCC expressed hope that wisdom and peace would prevail among all citizens of the country.” [2]
This is a call to action for the churches in India to stop the so-called desecration of the Sunday Sabbath. Churches are pressuring politicians to protect Sunday as the day of rest and worship. This is a significant development because this is ultimately how Sunday laws will be passed. Despite the many secular efforts being made to make Sunday popular and to promote this day in the hearts and minds of the people, the Christian churches will untimely be the ones to persuade our politicians to cross the threshold between church and state.
We have been warned from inspiration that the church will exert its influence to pressure the state to establish Sunday through legal enactment:
“To secure popularity and patronage, legislators will yield to the demand for a Sunday law.” (Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 451).
“The dignitaries of church and state will unite to bribe, persuade, or compel all classes to honor the Sunday” (Great Controversy, p. 592).
How long before something similar occurs in the United States? Well, it won’t be long because Christians here in America share the exact same sentiments about Sunday as do their counterparts in India. Christians from all over the world are in favor of laws that prohibit working on Sundays in order to honor this day as holy. They think that by closing businesses on Sunday, society as a whole will have the opportunity to strengthen family and church relationships. Unfortunately, Protestants have no clue where all of this is headed:
“They are working in blindness. They do not see that if a Protestant government sacrifices the principles that have made them a free, independent nation, and through legislation brings into the Constitution, principles that will propagate papal falsehood and papal delusion, they are plunging into the Roman horrors of the Dark Ages” (Review and Herald, December 11, 1888).
God has given us a task to complete at this time for a reason:
“I do hope that the trumpet will give a certain sound in regard to this Sunday-law movement … We should now be doing our very best to defeat this Sunday law” (Counsels to Writers and Editors, pp. 97, 98).

The Sunday movement is now making its way in darkness. The leaders are concealing the true issue, and many who unite in the movement do not themselves see whither the undercurrent is tending…. They are working in blindness. Pasteur Samuel says
Soyons seulement vigilant.
