London was thrown into chaos and confusion as it was hit with a terrorist attack on Wednesday. Five people have died – a policeman, three civilians and the attacker. More than 40 people were injured, 29 seriously as an ethnic Muslim and ISIS sympathizer mowed down pedestrians walking on the popular Westminster Bridge in London’s government district.
Khalid Masood drove an SUV in an Islamic-fueled terror attack as he targeted poor innocent people who were doing nothing wrong. These victims were just going about their daily business. Masood also attacked a police officer with a knife killing him before being shot to death by law enforcement.
The city of London has now joined the cities of Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Nice and many others as targets of mass, senseless acts of violence and terrorism.
Sadly, we keep seeing more and more of these acts of terror. Why are these attacks happening and what is the cause? Why are Western governments failing to protect its citizens who they are suppose to serve?
The argument can be made that politicians are failing to take national security serious and are ultimately responsible. Others say that terrorism is the result of open and unsecured borders. But God’s word tells us that terrorism sometimes comes as a direct result of Divine judgment that comes as a result of rejecting God and His clear teachings from our personal and national life.
We are warned in the writings of Scripture that there are horrible, catastrophic consequences, which include terrorism, when nations begin to legalize sin, immorality and policies that are abominable to a pure and holy God.
“And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.” Leviticus 26:15-17.
Western nations have been increasingly becoming more and more secular while true, spiritual faith that renders obedience to God’s word has nearly become extinct. In a recent article call “Christianity in Europe is Dying” we are told that only 1.4 percent of the population in England attends church. It also reveals that in Germany, the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation, only 8% of the population believe in God.
From these once Christian western nations where the word of God was once revered we are seeing a catastrophic decline in morality and open hostility to Christians who want to uphold the moral principles of God’s word. True, faithful Christians in Europe are being fined and arrested for simply teaching God’s word.
Notice the high price that nations pay when they reject God and His truth: “Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law…And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries. And nation was destroyed of nation, and city of city: for God did vex them with all adversity.” 2Chronicles 15:3, 5, 6.
So it is quite possible that more acts of terror will continue to be felt throughout Europe, America, Asia, Africa and in other places in spite of any strong national security systems. There are consequences to the decisions we make because God keeps an account with all the nations. And no amount of security can protect us when God Himself intervienes in judgment.
“God keeps a reckoning with the nations. Through every century of this world’s history evil workers have been treasuring up wrath against the day of wrath; and when the time fully comes that iniquity shall have reached the stated boundary of God’s mercy, His forbearance will cease. When the accumulated figures in heaven’s record books shall mark the sum of transgression complete, wrath will come, unmixed with mercy, and then it will be seen what a tremendous thing it is to have worn out the divine patience. This crisis will be reached when the nations shall unite in making void God’s law.” (Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 523).
We don’t need candle light vigils, balloons, teddy bears, flowers, building illuminations or wreath laying ceremonies. These things alone will not protect anyone. We need God’s forgiveness, His mercy and protection. For the Lord has declared:
“If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you. And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new. And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.” Leviticus 26:3-12.
