One of the clearest signs that we are heading toward the final crisis in Earth’s history is the growing effort to secure civil recognition and legal protection for Sunday. While many may view the events unfolding in Greece merely as a labor issue, Bible prophecy points to a much deeper significance. Across the globe, there is an increasing push to guarantee Sunday rest in the name of family time, worker well-being, physical and mental health, social stability, the common good, and time for worship. Although the justifications for Sunday laws may vary, the result is the same: apply pressure to exalt Sunday through civil legislation.
On July 20, 2026, the European Office of the World Federation of Trade Unions reported that commerce workers across Greece launched a nationwide strike demanding that Sunday be legally protected as the nation’s day of rest. Demonstrations were held in 18 cities, with workers arguing that expanding Sunday commerce deprives them of family life, personal time, and much-needed rest. Their main demand is that the government enact stronger legal protections to preserve Sunday as a guaranteed day of rest.
The World Federation of Trade Unions expressed the following:
• “Thousands of commerce workers across Greece sent a strong and militant strike message
on Sunday, 19 July 2026, demanding the protection of Sunday as a day of rest and the
signing of a sectoral Collective Bargaining Agreement.” [1]• “The nationwide strike, called by the Federation of Private Employees of Greece, was marked by strike rallies, demonstrations, and interventions outside shops, supermarkets, and shopping centers. Mobilizations took place in 18 cities throughout the country.” [1]
• “Commerce workers made it clear that they will not accept the transformation of Sunday into yet another working day.” [1]
• “With banners, slogans, and organized strike action, workers highlighted the harsh conditions … and Sunday work that deprives thousands of workers of their free time, family life, and the ability to plan their lives.” [1]
• “We are workers, not machines. Sundays belong to workers and their families, not to the large retail corporations,’ was the message heard loudly during the strike mobilizations.” [1]
• “The strike placed at the center of the struggle the demand for a sectoral Collective Bargaining Agreement providing substantial wage increases, the legal protection of Sunday as a day of rest, stable daily and weekly working hours, the abolition of split shifts, and effective health and safety measures in every workplace.” [1]
• “The next major point of mobilization will be the nationwide mass rally on 5 September.” [1]
The issue has never been whether people need a weekly day of rest. God Himself established that principle at Creation. The real issue is which day bears God’s authority and approval. Scripture plainly declares that “the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God” (Exodus 20:10). Whenever human authority seeks to exalt a different day through civil legislation, the controversy ultimately becomes one of allegiance—whether we will obey God or men (Acts 5:29).
Bible prophecy warns that a time is coming when civil and religious powers will unite to enforce a false system of worship (Revelation 13:11–17). Before that final crisis arrives, public opinion must first be conditioned to view Sunday as a day worthy of legal protection and government enforcement. As more people become convinced that Sunday observance promotes family life, social stability, worker well-being, and the common good, the path is gradually being prepared for legislation that elevates Sunday through the power of the state. The militant nationwide strike in Greece is another reminder that calls for the legal protection of Sunday continue to gain momentum in different parts of the world.
The world is steadily moving toward the final conflict over worship. These developments should deepen our commitment to Christ, strengthen our confidence in the sure word of prophecy, and inspire us to proclaim the everlasting gospel and the Three Angels’ Messages with renewed urgency. Now is the time to lift high the banner upon which is inscribed “The commandments of God and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12), faithfully preparing ourselves and others for the soon return of our Lord.
