Like for starters, since when was it a sin to sing, play, or listen to secular music? I can see why a song like “Highway to Hell” is highly looked down upon, but I don’t think listening, playing it with friends, or singing along is going to condemn you to hell.

The whole point of Battle of the Bands is to make connections that will carry on after college into careers, marriage, and so on. Cramming religion down their throat will only push them further away. By having a more secular event it brings people together. Sure the song choices aren’t usually the best from the eyes of the extremist devout SDA members, but it’s still being regulated to a degree, making sure that it does uphold the universities core values and beliefs, and the students put a lot of time, effort, and practice to make sure they can put on a high quality setlist and show to build the environment and connections.

I’ll end with this: God works things for our own good. God doesn’t judge you based on your religious sect, the core beliefs you hold to, or the amount of times you’ve gone to the same church. The relationship between yourself and God is more important, and if building that relationship comes in a church congregation, in the middle of nature, or at The Battle of the Bands at WWU, then maybe keeping it around isn’t a bad idea.

Feel free to explain or elaborate, I’m a guy who likes to better understand things and if I’m not picking up what’s being put down in this article, I wouldn’t mind someone pointing out to me where I went wrong.

i do have to say that i agree with you david the constant eye of judgment that watches the youth is a major contribution to why most teens hate coming to church. as a young adult it makes me very happy that you do see an issue in this article for roasting some kids harmless fun

i just have to say as a student from walla walla that no matter where you send your kids they can and will always find and seek out what they want. if they want to party regularly they are going to become friends with the people that do that and so on. i do acknowledge that advintist universities have done thing the advintist community hasn’t liked but honestly what’s going to be better walla walla or uc berkley

Have you ever had a spec in your eyes? It is extremely painful and irritating. It is hard to concentrate on anything else until the spec is removed. You can point at the beams of others all you all you want but it will do nothing to alleviate the pain of one’s one spec. It must be removed.

Agree! I attended this school as did both my children, and while none of our Adventist schools are perfect, I am grateful for the Godly staff and students who helped shape me and my sons into Christian professionals.
