America is land of freedom and the religious liberty. The first pilgrim fathers came and found a sparsely populated area with very few inhabitants the Red indians. The protestant reformers fled from England and sought assylum in the western hemisphere. At this time , King Henry VIII,had decided to break ties with Rome , because he decided to marry. He then decided to form his own church which is now called Church of England. However, the Anglican church which seperated itself from Rome still clung to many doctrines of the Catholic church. The pilgrim fathers about 102 of them came and established a plymouth early settlement in pennyslyvania in 1620. The protestants sought to establish a nation without a King and nation without a Pope.

So, they established a democratic nation in the western hemisphere free from Papal tyranny. America became the citadel of freedom and religious liberty. Republicanism and Protestanism became the founding cornerstones of this young and noble republic. America grew slowly by slowly and became one of the most powerful nations in the world. That's why the 16th , President Abraham Lincoln said in a speech in pettysburg, a nation founded on democracy and a government of the people, and by the people for the people.

But the relations with Rome , started a long time ago, since the inception of the American nation. The Jesuits are very cunning. They devised a clever plot to establish themselves in America. They used a man called George Calvert, whose parents were protestants, he was secretary of state to King James and he was awarded a title Baron Baltimore as a reward for his loyalty. He retired from the British politics and then he converted to Catholicism. He went to America as he was directed by his Jesuit superiors to establish a catholic English speaking colony near chesapeake bay. The King gave him a grant and annual pension for the venture. Shortly afterward the privy council approved a charter for Terra Marriae,(Maryland). The King had suggested the name Marriana in honor of the Queen, Henrietta Maria. But Marianna was the name of a Jesuit( Juan De Marriana 1536-1624). Another possible reason for the name Maryland is that it honors Mary, whom the Jesuit order is devoted to.

It's noteworthy to clarify that, British parliament had outlawed the Roman catholicism in all it's territories.Regardless, Calvertwas determined to establish catholicism in the new world. But how could he do it? It would be impossible to declare his intentions openly. To avoid having a protestant outcry from side of atlantic to the another, Calvert secrecy and deceit, and enlisted the Jesuits to help him. Because of secrecy involved in Calvert's plan. The history of Maryland is somewhat murky and mysterious. Calvert's plan was to send catholic setttlers ,under the direction of jesuit supervisors who would act as gentlemen colonists. Using their birth names to acquire land and establish plantations, the Jesuits priests used aliases to report their religious activities to superious in Rome. So, maryland is state in the U.S founded by Roman catholic jesuits came into being. This is how the Jesuit order came to possess land in America.
