Shortly afterward the privy council approved a charter for Terra Marriae,(Maryland). The King had suggested the name Marriana in honor of the Queen, Henrietta Maria. But Marianna was the name of a Jesuit( Juan De Marriana 1536-1624). Another possible reason for the name Maryland is that it honors Mary, whom the Jesuit order is devoted to.
