On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Donald Trump stood before Congress during his State of the Union address and celebrated what he described as the “tremendous” advancement of Christianity in America. He declared that he loves religion and loves “bringing it back.” This was not an isolated remark. Throughout his administration, he has consistently defined his presidency as restoring Christianity to the center of American public life—repeating this theme in major speeches, policy announcements, and national events.
Now, with plans for a massive worship gathering on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, May 17, 2026—part of the 250th-anniversary celebrations leading up to July 4—the talk turns from words to action. A state-sponsored call to prayer, worship, hymns, and a “rededication” of America as one nation under God is uniting patriotism and religious observances into a single national event.
Prophetically speaking, history warns us that when the power of the state begins to advocate for religion, that is how governments begin to support it. What starts as a national celebration can become a powerful endorsement of unity in Sunday worship.
The concern is neither prayer itself nor personal faith. It is the federal government organizing and promoting national religious services on Sundays. Why can’t we see that history demonstrates that such unions, even when presented as spiritual renewal, can quickly escalate into enforcement?
“When Protestant churches shall unite with the secular power to sustain a false religion, for opposing which their ancestors endured the fiercest persecution, then will the papal sabbath be enforced by the combined authority of church and state. There will be a national apostasy, which will end only in national ruin.” (Last Day Events, p. 134).
