On October 1, 2026, KathPress, a Roman Catholic news agency, reported that the “Alliance for a Free Sunday in Austria”—a coalition made up of churches, labor unions, and local political representatives—had come together to promote Sunday under the motto “Democracy Needs a Free Sunday.” The campaign, supported by more than 50 organizations representing major institutions across Austrian society, is advocating for the legal protection and preservation of Sunday as the common day of rest for all of society.
KathPress reported the following:
• “The Alliance for a Free Sunday in Austria celebrated its 25th anniversary with a ceremony at Vienna City Hall on Thursday.” [1]
• “The anniversary celebration was held under the motto ‘Democracy Needs a Free Sunday!’ The Alliance advocates for the protection of Sundays as days of rest and the preservation of shared leisure time as an essential component of social cohesion. It comprises more than 50 organizations from churches, trade unions, and civil society. [1]
• “(Catholic) Bishop Wilhelm Krautwaschl, the Alliance’s spokesperson on the church-related side, emphasized … the importance of regular periods of rest. Constant stress without sufficient rest leads to health problems in the long run. The free Sunday is therefore not only a religious or cultural tradition, ‘but also a contribution to health,’ Krautwaschl said; an important point given the strained healthcare system. The free Sunday is therefore “a gift for the soul, for the family, for society, and for our health.” [1]
• “Vienna’s Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) praised the commitment of the alliance of trade unions, religious communities, and civil society. He stated that a free Sunday is ‘more than a question of working hours—it is a question of how we want to live together.’ He added that it creates time for family, friendships, sports, culture, and recreation.” [1]
• “Philip Kuhlmann, the alliance’s trade union spokesperson, also emphasized the role of Sunday as the day that interrupts the ‘dictates of the market.’ He added that digitalization, online retail, and increasing automation have not changed this. Especially for working people, shared leisure time becomes easier when as many people as possible have time off at the same time.” [1]
• “Political scientist Sieglinde Rosenberger focused on the connection between shared free time and democracy. ‘The work-free Sunday can be seen as a supportive framework for creating and strengthening the fundamental social currency of democracy, namely social cohesion and political trust … Democracy is strengthened when it can rely on the engagement and participation of its citizens … Withdrawal from organizations such as churches and trade unions therefore also weakens democracy, because the fabric of cohesion becomes more porous, and responsibility for others is considered less urgent’.” [1]
We are witnessing a powerful church–labor–civil coalition standing at the very doors of Austria’s seat of government, calling for Sunday to be preserved and legally protected as the common day of rest for society. Civil government is being urged to give legal preference and protection to a religious day of worship—Sunday.
People should have time to rest, for Scripture itself clearly pronounces a blessing upon those who embrace the Sabbath rest that God has given us. But the biblical Sabbath is not Sunday but Saturday—the seventh day, established by God at Creation and enshrined in the Fourth Commandment: “The seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God” (Exodus 20:10).
The real concern, therefore, is not rest—because God has already commanded us to rest. The issue is forced Sunday compliance. It is not family time—because God has already provided a sacred day for rest, worship, and time with our families. The issue is the legal elevation of Sunday, a counterfeit day of rest established by human tradition rather than by the command of God.
Revelation 13 warns of religious influence and civil power coming together to dictate matters of worship and obedience. This issue will play a central role in that final conflict during the Mark of the Beast crisis. For that reason, movements calling for Sunday to become the legally protected common day of rest are troubling—especially when churches, labor unions, civic organizations, and political leaders begin speaking with one voice and calling upon civil government to protect Sunday by law.
