In recent days, a sermon has circulated online featuring a Seventh-day Adventist female preacher who used popcorn theatrics as an illustration of spiritual life. With exaggerated gestures mimicking kernels of corn bursting in a popper—“pop, pop, pop!”—she attempted to dramatize how people’s lives can supposedly “pop” into spirituality. Tragically, this spectacle was a poor display and a shallow representation of the sacred uniqueness of the Seventh-day Adventist mission and message. Such performances only remind us why the church continues to remain in the Laodicean condition described in Revelation 3:16—neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm and in danger of being spewed out.
The video was originally published by SDA Church of Laughs, a social media page that chronicles music and sermon highlights from various Adventist churches. [1] The major concern with the “Popcorn Sermon” is not the use of illustrations itself—Jesus often used parables to teach spiritual truth. The real problem lies in the spectacle and theatrics that replaced the careful exposition of biblical truths. When Adventist preaching turns into a comedy show, the emphasis shifts away from God’s word and is reduced to pure entertainment, leaving members laughing at the performance rather than being convicted by God’s Spirit.
These kinds of sermons do not produce repentance, obedience, transformation, or any lasting spiritual impact. Such clownish antics undermine the solemnity of the hour in which we are living today. They promote the very lukewarmness that the book of Revelation condemns. True preaching must awaken conviction, not provide trivial amusements. It should point people to Christ’s sacrifice, call them to repentance, and urge believers to surrender fully to His will. Any sermon that leaves people merely laughing or entertained rather than weeping over sin and rejoicing in Christ’s grace, power, righteousness, and call to holy living is not a message that is spirited by the Holy Spirit.
Rather than lifting up the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12), far too many pulpits offer theatrics, drama, and spectacles designed to keep us in a lukewarm state—neither hot nor cold—preparing us only to be spewed out. What we desperately need is truth—present truth. We need revival and reformation that bring real transformation in the lives of believers. Until this reality is embraced, Adventism will continue in its Laodicean condition—content with the sound of kernels popping in the pulpit, while blind to the true fire of the Holy Spirit that alone can bring transformation.
If Adventist preaching continues down the path of shallow, entertaining “popcorn sermons,” the result will not be revival but ruin. Entertaining messages can make people laugh, but they cannot convict the conscience, convert the soul, or prepare a people for the soon coming of Christ. Instead, the only “popping” that will be heard is the dreadful crackling of the lake of fire—“pop, pop, pop”—a fire that will not only pop the corn but also consume both the pulpit and people who have exchanged the solemn messages of Revelation 14 for empty amusement.
