Dr. Carlton Byrd, President of the Southwest Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, TV personality, and featured speaker at various Adventist events, has been the subject of ethical and moral breaches involving plagiarism and the introduction of worship practices inconsistent with Adventist principles. The time for indecision has passed. His plagiarism before Oakwood University students and staff [1], combined with the continued promotion of Pentecostal-style worship and disruptive public antics, has brought embarrassment, confusion, and division to the body of Christ.
For the honor of God, the purity of the Adventist message, and the protection of the flock, Dr. Byrd must do the honorable thing and either resign or be relieved of his office. The church may extend forgiveness, but it must also act faithfully to preserve the sacredness of its calling. To remain silent or inactive would make the church complicit in deception and compromise.
The Southwest Region Conference Executive Committee bears full administrative authority over the operation of the conference—including the employment, discipline, or removal of its president. The committee must therefore take immediate action and issue a formal statement to its membership, reaffirming that such behaviors cannot be tolerated and that the conference remains committed to transparency, accountability, and biblical integrity in leadership.
This decision, while difficult, is necessary. The credibility of the church’s message depends upon the integrity of its messengers. Only by taking decisive action can the church preserve the sacredness of the pulpit, uphold the truthfulness of the gospel, and demonstrate that leadership within God’s church is not based on theatrics, showmanship, or popularity, but upon character, honesty, and faithfulness to the Word of God.

When Present Truth is not preached, this is one of the evils we get. Let us not sit and support, maintain such unfaithful ministers who do not fear God!
“1 Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.
2 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD. ”
Jeremiah 23:1-2 KJV
We are living in a time when there are “multitudes who have no fear of God. The age is marked with a depravity extremely offensive to God. Ministers and church members engage zealously in the work of making void the law of God. They have reduced the holy precepts to a dead letter. The time is coming when God must vindicate His glory before the transgressors of His law.” 8LtMs, Ms 50, 1893, par. 31
“Everywhere, in all ages of the world, God’s words have proved true. He that fears the Lord and works righteousness is accepted by Him. But when the pastors of the churches are ignorant of the Scriptures, when they are too indolent and self-satisfied to fear in regard to their understanding of the Scriptures, but oppose the truth, and are devoted to selfish interests, the flock of God is not fed. The people are not instructed in regard to present truth.” 15LtMs, Ms 35, 1900, par. 20
I have just one question. Did you call Dr. Byrd and have a conversation with him to see if Tolan gave his permission to use his sermons material (something preachers do all the time), or are you just running off of what and the internet people who olny give clips are saying.
If you will be faithful to the Bible should you not have a conversation with your brother first?
Or are you only using teh Bible when it does not suit what you want to hit out at?
We need to be faithful to ALL of Scripture.
Jesus & the writers of the NT often quoted OT passages but didn’t quote the sources – different, I suppose, but it happened. EGW has been accused of plagiarism.
If Byrd went to “Babylon” & actually did get permission, did he acknowledge the source of his sermon? Shameful if he stole all or part of a sermon almost word-for-word; he didn’t even try to tweak it. Maybe others also go to “Babylon” or use AI to compose their sermons.
Other SDA preachers have jumped on this as well, blasting Byrd for it. Stay tuned…
Amen. Thank you!
Whether he got permission or not doesn’t matter, it’s still a sin. When God tells you what your job is and you don’t obey Him.
We are in the last days! These men were given Instruction on what to preach, if he was faithful in this work, he would not have fallen to temptation.
It is disobedience, indifference, and indulence that leads to these evils.
A Minister who fears God will never do such a thing. And all those ministers who practice this evil in our church need to heed the warnings of God and turn from this sin.
He should have been fired long ago for bringing in confusion from Babylon’s daughters,
There was an article in the mid 80’s suggesting North America was to become a testing ground for an experimental Social emotional lead Christianity, looking at the NAD I’d say that article was accurate,
They need to return to the Word & SOP instead of seeking to uplift the Jesuits Social Justice.
Please give the the articles name of you recall. I’d like to read it. Thanks
Because he is not an academic, firing is a bridge too far. He should no longer be invited to preach on behalf of the SDA Church community.
