This is exactly what will happen when a Christian identity is imposed through government—religious observance becomes civil law, and those who violate Sunday trading bans face punishment. The issue is not Christianity; the issue is state-backed religious coercion. Religious liberty protects Christianity, but religious establishments imposed by governments bring persecution.
The Street Vendors Association Nagaland (SVAN) is a civil society advocacy and trade organization that works with the government to protect vendor rights and promote vendor regulations and laws. They also do inspections of vendors to make sure that their rights are protected and that the vendor laws are being kept. On October 6, 2026, SVAN announced that it was conducting Sunday-morning inspections in Dimapur, a municipality that has a population of 172,000, looking for commercial activity that was being done during Sunday Christian worship hours. They were going around looking for Sunday trading violations and threatening vendors with confiscation and fines.
The Morung Express, a major newspaper based in Nagaland, India, reported the following:
• “The Street Vendors Association Nagaland (SVAN) has cautioned street vendors and hawkers operating in Dimapur against conducting business during Sunday morning worship hours, stating that violations could invite fines and other enforcement action.” [1]
• “SVAN said that it conducted an internal survey across several commercial areas from around 4:30 am on Sunday and found that numerous hawkers and vendors were arriving from neighboring Assam and starting business activities.” [1]
• “SVAN said Nagaland being a Christian state, Christian religious observances should likewise be respected, particularly during Sunday morning worship hours.” [1]
• “It warned that vendors violating applicable directives could face enforcement action in coordination with local authorities, including ‘substantial fines’ for violations.” [1]
• “A press release from SVAN said that it conducted an internal survey across several commercial areas from around 4:30 am on Sunday and found that numerous hawkers and vendors were arriving from neighboring Assam and starting business activities.” [1]
• “Local vendors selling essential perishable food items may operate on Sundays after 12 noon, subject to applicable requirements. All other general commercial vending, hawking, and roadside stalls must remain closed during the restricted worship hours.” [1]
• “The association urged local and visiting vendors to comply with the directive, warning of possible enforcement action, confiscation of goods or financial penalties for violations.” [1]
What is happening in Northeast India should serve as a warning to America. Across the United States, political and religious leaders are increasingly calling for the restoration of America’s “Christian” heritage and for a greater role for Christianity in government and public institutions. There is an enormous difference, however, between protecting the freedom of Christians to practice their faith and using the power of government to promote or enforce religious practices.
That distinction is critical. Once the government assumes the responsibility of defending a particular religious identity, the question eventually becomes: What happens to those whose convictions do not conform to the religious practices favored by the majority? The answer is obvious – fines, confiscations, and persecution.
This is precisely why the growing union of religion and civil government deserves careful attention. Revelation 13 warns of a time when religious influence and civil authority will ultimately come together in America, culminating in laws involving worship and economic penalties for those who refuse to comply. Whenever government begins enforcing church doctrine, the dangerous precedent is established that will lead to discrimination against minorities.
And when Sunday observance is placed behind the power of civil law, those who conscientiously keep the seventh-day Sabbath will find themselves standing exactly where religious minorities elsewhere have stood—facing penalties because they refuse to surrender their convictions to the demands of the state.
