The seven-minute standing ovation that Pope Leo XIV received in the Spanish Parliament on June 8, 2026, is historic because of its length and because it marked the first time a pope had ever addressed Spain’s national legislative body. Lawmakers responded with shouts of “Long live the Pope!” as he was honored by a nation with a level of respect not extended to anyone else—not even its king or its politicians. The ovation is a testament to the enormous moral and political influence exercised by the papacy.
The Associated Press described the reception as extraordinary and historic:
• “Spanish lawmakers gave Pope Leo XIV a standing ovation on Monday after he called for respect for migrants’ rights and international law in a historic address to parliament that signaled a new level of acceptance of the Catholic Church in the overwhelmingly secular country.” [1]
• “In the first-ever papal address to Spanish lawmakers, the American pope said a ‘moral renewal’ was necessary in legislatures and public life.” [1]
• “The Catholic Church was a pillar of Gen. Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, enjoying broad control and influence over Spanish society, but that waned after democracy took root in the 1970s.” [1]
• “While many Spaniards still identify as Catholic, religious observance has dropped sharply amid secularizing trends seen in other once-staunchly Christian countries.” [1]
• “And yet lawmakers gave Leo a 7-minute standing ovation with chants of ‘Viva el Papa!’—’Long live the pope!” [1]
• “Leo’s weeklong visit to Spain—the first since Benedict visited in 2011—has drawn large crowds, with an estimated 1.5 million people turning out for Mass on Sunday in a downtown plaza and 600,000 young people for a prayer vigil.” [1]
This serves as another reminder that the Papacy occupies a position unlike any other institution on earth. Kings, presidents, and prime ministers rise and fall, but the Pope is increasingly presented as the global moral authority on matters of politics, religion, economics, peace, human rights, and international affairs. The fact that a secular parliament in modern Spain—one of the most secularized nations in Europe—would rise in unison and applaud a Pope for seven minutes and chant, “Long live the Pope,” illustrates the continuing and growing love and reverence the world has for the Papacy. This admiration goes far beyond the boundaries of the Catholic Church.
Those who view current events in the light of Bible prophecy will see a world that is becoming increasingly receptive to religious influence in public life—not only in America but also throughout the nations. Revelation 13:3 declares, “And all the world wondered after the beast.” This prophecy points to a time when the Papacy, after receiving its deadly wound, would once again regain worldwide admiration, influence, and authority. Ellen G. White foresaw this development when she wrote:
“The world is filled with storm and war and variance. Yet under one head—the papal power—the people will unite to oppose God in the person of His witnesses. This union is cemented by the great apostate.” (Testimonies, Vol. 7, p. 182).
