The Catholic Church is using America’s 250th anniversary as an opportunity to evangelize and promote what it views as a spiritual renewal of the nation under Christ. Catholic leaders see this milestone as a chance to highlight the Church’s contributions to American history, reaffirm the influence of Catholicism in the United States, and pray for the conversion of the nation’s people and future generations.
A nationwide billboard campaign is being led by Catholics for Catholics with the stated goals of bringing the nation to a greater allegiance to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. Through highly visible messaging across the country, organizers hope to use the occasion of America’s 250th anniversary to advance a vision of spiritual renewal centered on Christ and guided by the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church.
Catholics for Catholics has just released the following call to evangelize America:
• “Since 2023, Catholics for Catholics, in an effort to manifest the beauty and sacredness of Catholicism in America, has been launching an annual campaign.” [1]
• “This year’s campaign is even more special since it is complementing the initiative of the US Bishops to consecrate our beloved nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.” [1]
• “This is not a mere billboard ad, but a public prayer, wherein we display the sweet face of Jesus and His Heart burning with love for souls—together with a forceful declaration: That we, the United States of America, are “One Nation under Christ” and that our primary allegiance is to Him and His Holy Catholic Church.” [1]
• “Your financial support helps us continue evangelizing America. Together, we ask Our Lord for His Mercy on this nation and all of her children that need urgent conversion.” [1]
• “This year, we’re planning to place the Sacred Heart billboards in different cities of the nation, starting in Phoenix, AZ.” [1]
The Catholic Church’s efforts surrounding America’s 250th anniversary illustrate a growing desire to shape the nation’s spiritual identity through Catholic influence and evangelization. The billboard campaign sponsored by Catholics for Catholics is not simply calling people to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It explicitly declares that America’s “primary allegiance” should be to Christ and “His Holy Catholic Church.” This reveals an effort to strengthen the public role of Catholicism in American life and to encourage the nation to look to the Church as a spiritual guide for its future.
Bible prophecy warns that in the last days a power symbolized by the beast would exercise worldwide influence and that another power would arise that would eventually cause the earth to honor and support the first beast (Revelation 13:11–17). Seventh-day Adventists have historically identified the first beast as the Papacy and the second beast as the United States. The “image of the beast” is formed when religious institutions obtain the support of government power to promote religious doctrines.
While the image of the beast has not yet been fully formed, the growing acceptance of Catholic influence, the increasing prominence of religion in national affairs, and repeated calls for spiritual unity under religious and political leadership are developments moving society in the direction described in Revelation 13. Today, there is a noticeable convergence of religious, political, and social voices calling for a return to faith as the solution to America’s problems.
Catholic leaders, and especially the Papacy, are being presented as moral authorities not only for Catholics but for society at large. These developments are creating an environment in which the Constitutional protections that separate church and state will gradually erode. The final conflict will center upon worship, authority, obedience, and whether humanity will follow the commandments of God or the traditions and institutions of men.
“When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the State to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result” (Great Controversy, p. 445).
