Republicans suffered a major defeat in the 2026 midterm elections. Exit polls and political discussions suggest that the unpopular war in Iran, the resulting rise in gasoline prices, and the overall rise in cost of living contributed to voter dissatisfaction. Many Americans, including Republican voters who do not closely follow the daily political debates, expected President Donald Trump to deliver on his promises to address the needs of Americans here at home. Trump has not ended the war in Ukraine as promised, the war in Iran continues, interest rates remain high, and the promised relief at the gas pump and the cost of living have not materialized.
Democrats now hold the votes in both chambers to set the legislative agenda. They will presumably push for socialism and extreme liberal policies and push to impeach and investigate Donald Trump and his administration. However, controlling Congress does not mean Democrats can automatically enact their agenda. President Trump retains the power to veto legislation, and overriding a presidential veto requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers. Unless Democrats and the President find areas of compromise, the next two years could be characterized by legislative gridlock, political investigations, and increasingly bitter confrontations between Congress and the White House.
That makes the remaining weeks critical. Republicans lost the election, but they remain in power until the new Congress takes office. The lame-duck session gives Republicans a narrow window to pass legislation before the newly elected lawmakers assume control on January 3, 2027. Although lame-duck sessions can be controversial, they provide outgoing Republican lawmakers with one final opportunity to exercise their legislative authority before leaving office. The Republican-controlled Congress and the Trump administration will most likely look to advance their Christian political agenda before the balance of power changes.
This election defeat may have temporarily weakened President Trump’s political influence in a Democrat-controlled Congress, but it does not mean the end of the Christian nationalist movement or its efforts to expand religious influence over American government. The churches, religious advocacy groups, and political organizations seeking greater control over public policy, education, and legislation remain active and organized. Their political ambitions do not disappear simply because an election changes the balance of power in Washington. Instead, future elections—including the 2028 presidential and congressional elections—will provide new opportunities for these movements to regain political influence and advance their agendas.
With regard to the Vatican, Rome’s influence remains unfazed because it is not dependent on which political party controls Washington or who occupies the White House. The Vatican has historically maintained relationships with governments and political leaders across party lines, allowing it to pursue its goals despite changes in political leadership. While Republicans and Democrats battle for political power, the Roman Catholic Church continues engaging with both sides.
This is why the 2026 midterm elections do not represent a setback for the Vatican. From a prophetic perspective, religious influence over civil government will continue regardless of which political party holds power. Rome does not need to win elections to advance its agenda; its pursuit of political influence transcends partisan lines, electoral defeats, and changes in government.
“Marvelous in her shrewdness and cunning is the Roman Church. She can read what is to be. She bides her time, seeing that the Protestant churches are paying her homage in their acceptance of the false sabbath and that they are preparing to enforce it by the very means which she herself employed in bygone days … History testifies of her artful and persistent efforts to insinuate herself into the affairs of nations; and having gained a foothold, to further her own aims, even at the ruin of princes and people” (Great Controversy, p. 580).
Rome wins every election. It uses those in power until they obtain their objective and then hang them out to dry.
Democratic tyranny is coming. Republican tyranny will then make a comeback.
