On June 24, 2026, Venezuela was struck by powerful back-to-back earthquakes, causing severe damage, numerous deaths, and thousands of injuries. Two massive quakes shook the nation within seconds of each other, triggering widespread panic and massive rescue operations. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) issued a red alert and warned that the casualties could be catastrophic, with estimates reaching up to 100,000 deaths.
The news media reported the following:
• “The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has issued grim projections, estimating a 44 percent probability that fatalities could eventually rise to as many as 10,000 people, while there remains a 30 percent possibility that the toll could climb towards 100,000 under worst-case conditions.” [1]
• “Although these estimates are based on historical earthquake patterns and statistical modeling rather than confirmed casualties, they underscore the extreme scale of destruction feared by experts. The devastating impact stems from the unusual combination of two massive earthquakes striking within less than a minute of each other. The first quake measured 7.2 magnitude, followed almost immediately by a stronger 7.5-magnitude tremor — the most powerful earthquake to hit Venezuela in more than a century.” [1]
When we see the tragic loss of human life, the devastating earthquakes reported in Venezuela, and the unsettled condition of society, these events remind us that the world is not moving toward peace and stability, but toward the very conditions Christ warned about: “wars and rumors of wars,” “earthquakes in divers places,” and “distress” among the nations. They reveal that Satan is working with increasing intensity as time grows short.
“In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hail-storms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power. He sweeps away the ripening harvest, and famine and distress follow. He imparts to the air a deadly taint, and thousands perish by the pestilence. These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous” (Great Controversy, p. 589).
These calamities should awaken us to our mission. The Three Angels’ Messages must be carried to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. The hour is late, probation is closing, and lives are being cut short all around us. Now is the time to plead for the lost, comfort the suffering, and point every soul to Jesus Christ—the only refuge in the storm, the only Savior from sin, and the only hope for a dying world.
This world is passing away, prophecy is moving forward, and Christ is soon to come. Now is the time to draw near to God. While the world is shaken by disaster and death, God’s people must rise up and proclaim the everlasting gospel. We should be praying earnestly for open doors so that souls are not going into the grave without Christ, without hope, and without hearing the final message of mercy.
