“In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hail-storms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power. He sweeps away the ripening harvest, and famine and distress follow. He imparts to the air a deadly taint, and thousands perish by the pestilence. These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous.” (Great Controversy, p. 589).
One of the strongest hurricanes in recorded history has just made landfall, transforming a tropical paradise into what can only be described as the aftermath of a war zone. On Monday, October 27, 2025, Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica with maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour, unleashing unparalleled destruction across the island. In a matter of hours, beautiful coastal communities were reduced to rubble, and lush hillsides disappeared underneath heavy rain, mud, and landslides. Entire regions were left without power, communication, food, water, and access to emergency services. This storm has now entered the record books as one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in Jamaica’s history.
The Daily Mail described Hurricane Melissa as the “storm of the century”:
• “Hurricane Melissa made landfall across the Caribbean Monday afternoon as the terrifying storm is set to be the worst in history. The Category 5 hurricane, which has been described as the ‘storm of the century’ that is now stronger than Katrina, is expected to unleash destruction across Jamaica with intense flooding and 185 mph winds.” [1]
Some areas of Jamaica received up to 40 inches of rain [2], resulting in catastrophic flooding and massive landslides, while storm surges exceeding 15 feet inundated coastal communities. The southwestern parishes of St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, and Manchester bore the brunt of the devastation. Entire communities were submerged by floodwaters; roads were washed away, and bridges crumbled under the relentless force of the rising waters. Homes were flattened, their roofs torn off, and their walls stripped bare by the combined assault of hurricane-force winds, fast-moving floodwaters, and towering storm surges. What once were beautiful tropical neighborhoods now lie in ruins, testifying to the overwhelming power of nature when it is unleashed upon our fragile world.
“In the last scenes of this earth’s history war will rage. There will be pestilence, plague, and famine. The waters of the deep will overflow their boundaries. Property and life will be destroyed by fire and flood. We should be preparing for the mansions that Christ has gone to prepare for them that love Him” (Last Day Events, p. 24).
Hurricane Melissa stands as a reminder of the vulnerability of property and life and how quickly everything can change with very little notice or no warning. The greatest threat to the world is not the economy. It is not terrorism, nor illegal immigration, nor the nuclear arms race. It is not climate change, the drug trade, or even the deepening corruption that infects our political and religious institutions. The greatest danger confronting humanity today is the judgment of a righteous and holy God, who will soon pour out His wrath upon a disobedient and unrepentant world.
“The time is at hand when there will be sorrow in the world that no human balm can heal. The Spirit of God is being withdrawn. Disasters by sea and by land follow one another in quick succession. How frequently we hear of earthquakes and tornadoes, of destruction by fire and flood, with great loss of life and property! Apparently these calamities are capricious outbreaks of disorganized, unregulated forces of nature, wholly beyond the control of man; but in them all, God’s purpose may be read. They are among the agencies by which He seeks to arouse men and women to a sense of their danger” (Prophets and Kings, p. 277).
Nations tremble at the thought of war, famine, and financial collapse, yet few fear the God who holds the breath of every living soul in His hand. The crises we see unfolding—violence, moral decay, natural disasters, and social chaos—are not merely the result of human failure; they are solemn warnings from Heaven that divine patience is wearing thin.
“The unbelieving world will soon have something to think of besides their dress and appearance; and as their minds are torn from these things by distress and perplexity, they will have nothing to turn to … They have not made God their refuge, and He will not be their consolation.” Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 268).
Only repentance and a return to the reverence of God can avert the judgments that are now gathering like storm clouds on the horizon. That is why the First Angel’s Message says, “Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters” (Revelation 14:7). When men refuse to honor their Creator and persist in rebellion against His law, the hand of mercy will be withdrawn, and the judgments of justice will follow.
“Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known:There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Romans 3:16-18.
